Matthew 8:14-17 (ESV)
And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. [15] He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. [16] That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. [17] This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: "He took our illnesses and bore our diseases."
Yes the “first pope” was married, he had a mother-in-law. Just saying, the tradition of married priests is older than the tradition of the celibate ones.
But that would be to miss the point here. Jesus healed her. And only after Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, did she begin to serve him. This is the way it is with all of us. Only after we have been healed can we serve Christ. Christ though does heal us. He heals each and every one of us with the forgiveness of sins. He does this Sunday after Sunday, day after day, because we are constantly sinning, and constantly becoming sick again. But day after day, Sunday after Sunday he heals us, and we serve him. We serve him as fathers and mothers, father in laws and mother in laws, as pastors and mechanics in everything we do, we serve him, because when he forgives our sins, we do everything in his name and to his glory.
