What is Wrong with Costly Apparel?

Alma 5:53 [Book of Mormon]
“And now my beloved brethren, I say unto you, can ye withstand these sayings; year, can ye lay aside these things, and trample the Holy One under your feet; yea, can ye be puffed up in the pride of your hearts; year, will ye still persist in the wearing of costly apparel nad setting your hearts upon the vain things of the world, upon your riches.”
It is the bane of my existence that I get the pleasure of seeing many pictures of Joseph Smith, this man is hardly the prophet wearing a camel hair coat and belt. He seems to be dressed to the nines in just about every picture I see of him, which makes this verse just a bit hypocritical in its condemnation of costly apparel. I also notice that for all the talk of modesty around here this is limited to the sense of not being sexually provocative, and often ignored in that sense too, by known Mormons. Costly apparel has a definite market in Utah, the likes of which I have hardly seen in all my travels, and I’ve lived in Orange County California.
Now I really don’t have a problem myself with costly apparel. I don’t think it is always the best use of ones money, but then who am I? I can’t claim to spend mine in the most wise manner. And I do think that it is good to have at least some nice clothes to wear to special occasions. I’m one that likes a formal event or two now and then.
And it might be mentioned that Christ’s robe, which he wore on the cross was of such a fine nature that the soldiers decided to gamble for it, rather than tear it.
