6 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for
your benefit, brothers, [1] that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is
written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. 7
For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not
receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive
it? (1 Corinthians 4:6-7 (ESV)
If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not
receive it?
Salvation is a gift, and so is everything that comes along
with it. Everyone is given different gifts. Sometimes people are tempted to
boast about the gifts they are given, as if it is some great accomplishment.
When a gift is being used in such a way as to build yourself up at the expense
of someone else it is being abused. This is what Paul has to say about that
matter. This is something that applies to all of us. What matters is the gift
of salvation, and all our other gifts should be used in such a way that they
work toward the salvation of others, that is in service to the whole church.
