The Council Meets

30 But on the next day, desiring to know the real reason why he was being accused by the Jews, he unbound him and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them. (Acts 20:30 (ESV)

Luke sets up for the next chapter when Paul will upset the council and get them arguing among themselves. What is interesting is the council will meet at the behest of the Roman Centurion. We have a separation of church and state to this day, and there definitely was one of some sort at this time too. The Romans were usually not that concerned with the doctrinal disputes of the Jews, but at times the Romans had to the disputes in order to maintain peace and order in the city. The same is largely true even today.
