The Helper

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:15-18)
Jesus speaks about the Holy Spirit that he will send to his disciples. He speaks of them as a Helper, the Spirit of Truth that the world cannot receive. He is someone different than Jesus, but he is still God, and for this reason the world does not receive him even as world does not receive Jesus.
What follows is fun because Jesus switches in and out of tenses, present and future. The Spirit that he will send to the disciples is already with them, but will also be in them. So he is with them, and he is coming to them. The Holy Spirit is a mystery. His job is to point to Christ, and sustain his disciples in faith. During the life of a Christian he comes to a disciple of Christ in many and various ways. So the disciples who had him would receive him. He can’t be possessed by anyone, rather it is he who possess you, and we will neither understand him completely. He can’t be put in a box but he will put himself in water, and come to us through the word. He works as he wants to work in us and through us who keep his word and use his sacraments.
