Pearls before Swine, Bo Giertz on Matthew 7:6
“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” Matthew 7:6(ESV)
The rule not to judge applies in our human relationships. It does not apply in questions of the “Holy,” also God’s truth, his word and Sacrament. It applies not to the pearl of great price, which is the gospel. One must not throw it away. One has to keep it and guard it. This means that one must reject some people because they falsify the truth. To give them that which is holy, and also accept them as they are, leads only to trampling that which is holy into the mud and harming those who believe. The church cannot be as open as it wants to be. The early church applied these words to the Lord’s Supper among other things, which was never celebrated in the presence of outsiders.
