No Blaze of Glory

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” (Luke 22:31-34)
Peter was willing to go to prison and to death with Jesus. There is no doubt in my mind that is true, and that he would have. What he wasn’t prepared for was Jesus sacrificing himself, and going to a death void of glory. A man can work himself up to go out in a blaze of glory, but to stand by a man who gives himself up, who tells you to put your sword away, who won’t let you fight for him, that is another story. Jesus knew what Peter would do, and by addressing it early he prevented Peter going the way of Judas. Peter repents, and when he does he knows to strengthen the others.
