One Thing Needful

Luke 10:38-42 (ESV)
Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. [40] But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." [41] But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, [42] but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."

Mary and Martha, Mary picks the good portion. Martha thought she was doing something for the Lord. The Lord would have been happier had Martha just sat and listened. I’m sure he enjoyed the meal and everything else. But there is a time and a place for everything. We have work to do. But when the Lord is speaking we dare not shut him out thinking what we have to do is more important than what he is saying. We operate on bad assumptions. We operate thinking we need to do something to please the Lord. Really in the end, we can take a lesson from Mary, the Lord is pleased when we listen to him, most of all when he is forgiving our sins.
