Becoming a Lamp

Mark 4:21-23 (ESV) And he said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket, or under a bed, and not on a stand? [22] For nothing is hidden except to be made manifest; nor is anything secret except to come to light. [23] If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear." Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket? Today it almost sounds odd, to talk about bringing a lamp anywhere, lamps sit on coffee tables, end tables, they rise from the floor from behind a couch, people walk around with flash lights, but that is wholly different. But lamps in Jesus day were small portable things quite like a flash light, and would often be put on a table to shed light into a room. This is what the gospel does. It sheds light on a place. It will not remain hidden. The more one exposes himself to the gospel the more it takes over a person’s own life, the more thay become that lamp that doesn’t hide under the bed. People always wonder how they can get to be better evangelists, there is no better way than to start dedicating time for yourself to study God’s word in prayer and devotion. The more your faith grows from feeding on God’s word in the Divine Service on Sunday, in Communion, in daily devotions and prayer, the more the light penetrates through you, and shines about you.
