The Will of His Father in Heaven

Matthew 12:46-50 (ESV)
While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. [47]
[48] But he replied to the man who told him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" [49] And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! [50] For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

“For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” This Jesus speaks at the end of a sermon, to a crowd that had gathered to hear him preach, a crowd that had come to believe in him. It is amazing, that simply put is the will of His Father in heaven. One hears the words spoken at his baptism, and later at the transfiguration, “This is my son with whom I am well pleased, Listen to Him!” Listen to him. That is the will of the Father in heaven. That we listen to his son, that is believe him, and take his words to heart.
It was precisely this that his mother and brothers were unwilling to do. Family dynamics, they aren’t always easy. Jesus’s mother and brother stood outside the crowd. They would not listen to the one who grew up in their house. They would not believe. It was too much for them to fathom. Even Mary, who gave birth as a virgin, who was told who Jesus was by an Angel, finally has doubts concerning her own son. His brothers, well anyone who has a brother can understand their predicament. Things would change over time. Mary and His brothers would come to finally believe and trust Jesus. But now they are scared that one from their own family would begin preaching in such a manner. Even if they did believe him, it would cost them their own reputations at home. It would cost them, and they were not sure it was yet worth the cost. Such is faith, it is easy enough in one way, but it will lay a cross on you yet. But when we do the Will of the Father in heaven and listen to Jesus, we are his brothers, his sisters, his mother, We are joined to his family and become coheirs of the kingdom with him.
