The Law of Moses in the Book of Mormon

3 Nephi 1:24 [Book of Mormon]
“And there were not contentions save it were a few that began to preach, endeavoring to prove by the scriptures that it was no more expedient to observe the law of Moses. Now in this thing they err, having not understood the scriptures”
So 3 Nephi starts with the Birth of Christ marked in the new world by a night in which there is no darkness, and a preaching of repentance and the baptisms of many.
But then there are those that are saying we no longer have to follow the law of Moses because Christ came. And in that they erred? I don’t see Mormons abstaining from pork? On the other hand they build temples all over the place contrary to the word of God in Leviticus 17, and the fourth chapter of the gospel of John. Of course they want to argue they are building temples in accord with old Testament practices.
So which is it, is it in play or not?
But to bring up the law of Moses here, when people are building temples all over the new world is pretty ridiculous. That hasn’t been playing out for quit a while even among the supposedly pious in the Book of Mormon.

Does it say how exactly they erred?

Benjamin,
It says what it says, and that is it. So we are left that it is the entirety of the Law of Moses, that is either in play or not in play.
However, the Nephites have been ignoring that since they left Jerusalem early on in this book, and so why they should think it is suddenly in play now that Jesus has come is a question for me.
But then why are we discussing this? You believe that this all could be erroneous, and I believe it is.

But they have not been ignoring it. The Sadducaic and Pharisaic interpretations of the law of Moses didn't exist for them, but the law of Moses itself did.

Admitting that there may be a few erroneous passages in scripture is not admitting that it could all be erroneous.

Yes, Benjamin they have been ignoring it. Especially the bit about where it is permitted to build temples, and offer sacrifices. In fact the behavior of the Nephites from the very beginning, even before they leave Jerusalem departs from the word of God, and has them worshiping goat demons by default. And this is not that they are ignoring the rules of men, but they are ignoring the Pentateuch!
And as I answered on another post, a Book that puts that big of a question mark over itself is worthless. It matters not if the errors may only be a sentence or two, especially when you don't know which sentences they may or many not be.

It seems to me that you are reading in what you expect and want to see rather than trying to discern what is really there.

Benjamin,
I read it. I read it for what it says. But it is pointless. As we don't know now what is a mistake and what isn't. And it is quite apparent that the whole thing is a mistake.
What is there is there, and that is what I read. But not only do the opening pages cast doubt upon the whole thing, not only do the contents there in test the credulity of any thinking man, but the book itself has never been, and never will be formative for the faith and life of Mormons,LDS, RLDS, or FLDS.
so if I read what I want into it, what difference does it make? If one were to do this with holy Scripture, I might be able to correct them by pointing to the text itself, and showing them what it says and doesn't say. But you don't seem to be able to do this here. You just dismiss it as I read into it what I want, because I don't read into it what you do.

The passage referenced is set before Christ has fulfilled the Atonement, but after He ha been born. The law of Moses was not yet fulfilled because the Savior had not given His great sacrifice. The Nephites kept the law of Moses up to the death of Christ as it ha been given to Moses, not as the Rabbis of the fsollowing centuries after Moses had interpretted it. I am sorry that you don't agree with the Book of Mormon.

2 Nephi 25 says:
23 For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do.

24 And, notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law of Moses, and look forward with steadfastness unto Christ, until the law shall be fulfilled.

25 For, for this end was the law given; wherefore the law hath become dead unto us, and we are made alive in Christ because of our faith; yet we keep the law because of the commandments.

26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.

I concurr with Leahona ... or isn't it really spelled Liahona?

Leahona,
Sorry, but have you even read the point I made?
The Law of Moses as it was given to Moses, was not at all followed by the Nephites. This can be seen as I said earlier by just the fact that they built temples, and offered sacrifices in the desert.

Leahona,
I commented on 2 Nephi a Long time ago on this post.
"After all you can do" is the problem, no where does Christ talk like this. His salvation is a free gift given to sinners who are dead in their trespasses, who cannot do anything. This makes the whole "gospel" nothing but more law. It makes you constantly question, have I done all I could do? and the answer is no, there is always more you could do, or could have done when it comes to doing things of the law. On the other hand there is nothing you can do to merit your own salvation. It is futile because you are dead in your trespasses and as long as you work in this state, your "good works" are nothing but filthy rags that you are throwing in the face of God. It is quite literally you spitting in his face as he hangs on the cross saying that can't be good enough, I must do something to add to what he did for me if I am to make it worthwhile.
But then Paul says things like the following:Romans 5:6-11 (ESV)
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. [7] For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— [8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. [9] Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. [10] For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. [11] More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

OrRomans 4:5 (ESV)
And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,
