Matthew 9:35-38 (ESV)
And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. [36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. [37] Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; [38] therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."
The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few… The situation is the same today. Yet every year our seminaries graduate more candidates than there are pulpits to fill. Men go without calls. Qualified men. I don’t know what all the answers are here. I really don’t. I know the harvest is plentiful.
It pains me to see men who have been given the abilities to be shepherds to the Lord’s sheep, sit on the side lines when the harvest is going on. It seems to me that there is something wrong with our system. I wouldn’t be the first to say that. I’m not about to get down about our synod, and how she does things. I’m not going to lampoon leadership. But I think if we can fix this problem, the rest will begin to fall into place. And the only thing I can think there is to solve this problem is more effort in foreign and domestic missions. We are wasting our most valuable resources, because we don’t think we have the money to use them to our advantage.
