Matthew 10:24-25 (ESV)
"A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. [25] It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. “
It is not an easy thing to be a disciple of Christ. It will cost you! There is a cost of discipleship. There is a cross to bear. Neither will you be able to determine what this cost is, nor will you get to choose your cross. So often, people think that the cost is a life of sobriety and chastity. These perhaps are blessings more than they are crosses. The point is though that people think that the cost and the cross is in those things they give up of their own accord or willingly. It is rarely so. The cost will be your own life, the cross will take it from you. It will be the desire respond to your enemies and hold on tenaciously to your pride, but the cross will rip your pride from you as you hold on to it so tenaciously. Everything, even your integrity will be compromised in the end. But there when your honor, your dignity, your goods, children, and wife have been taken from your life, then you are left with nothing but Christ. And there in him you will find forgiveness, you will find life, there in Christ. And you will know that it is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, for in that there is true joy that is unimaginable.
