Matthew 9:9-13 (ESV)
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.
[10] And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. [11] And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" [12] But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. [13] Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
It is blasé these days to say Christ was a friend of tax collectors and sinners. It has become second nature to us to admit that we are sinners, so of course Christ was friends with sinners. But that fails. Christ was a friend of traitors, of harlots, of drunkards, of drug addicts. In fact Christ still is. Jesus is friends with sinners, sinners like you and me, and sinners that we despise. He is their friend if he is our friend. He cannot eat with us, if he does not eat with them. We cannot afford to separate ourselves from them, if we would eat with Christ. He came not to call the righteous but sinners. And it is sinners he saves, sinners he calls, and sinners are sinners are sinners.
