Matthew 6:2-4 (ESV)
"Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. [3] But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
That they may be praised by others… Many people give with the ambition of praise. So praise them. What’s it to you if they don’t receive a reward from your Father in heaven? And perhaps they are hypocritical, but then God tends to use their hypocrisy to get things done. It is one thing for God to call them hypocrites, but we are just hypocrites ourselves when we do it.
Funny though, I often hear how hypocritical churches are to spend money on their buildings etc, when so many go poor and needy. And in the back of my mind is always the question, of how much this hypocrite has done for the poor lately. At least the people of the church have given the poor people a nice warm comfortable and aesthetically pleasing place to hear good news preached to them. Probably have done a bit more than that too.
In any case, we can always apply this to ourselves. Others don’t need to know what we are giving and when or to whom. We don’t need to receive earthly praise, nor do we need to bother being bothered by the world’s judgment. Our Father sees what we do, and he will reward us in his own way at his own time. I mean he already forgave us our sin on account of His Son dying for us, we really don’t even need a reward after that!
