Matthew 5:1-10 (ESV)
Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.
[2] And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:
[3] "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
[4] "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
[5] "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
[6] "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
[7] "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
[8] "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
[9] "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
[10] "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Beatitudes are the blessings with which Jesus opens up his sermon on the mount as it is called. Blessed are the, blessed are those… And they are the opposite of what people make of religion. The people are passive. They are given to. The poor in spirit inherit the kingdom of heaven. Those who mourn are comforted. The meek inherit the earth. Those hungry for righteousness those who thirst for it are satisfied.
Those who hunger for it know they do not have it, otherwise they would not hunger for it. Those who don’t hunger for it normally think they have it already. So here you have a basic distinction. Christ preaches a theology of the cross in opposition to the theology of man, a theology of Glory. Christ blesses those the world thinks should be forsaken, or cursed. These are the people Christ came to save. In actual fact we all need his salvation, but some refuse to recognize it.
