Alma: 34:12-15 [Book of Mormon]
“But the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered; therefore there can be nothing which is short of an infinite atonement which will suffice for the sins of the world. Therefor it is expedient that there should be a great and last sacrifice, and then shall there be, or it is expedient there should be a stop to the shedding of blood; then shall the law of Moses be fulfilled; yea, it shall be all fulfilled, every jot and tittle, and none shall have passes away, and behold, this is the whole meaning of the law, every whit pointing to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yeah infinite and eternal, and thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name; this being the intent of this last sacrifice, to bring about the bowels of mercy, which overpowereth justice, and bringeth about means unto men that they may have faith unto repentance. “
I read passages like this in the Book of Mormon and I think, these people just don’t understand at all what is written here. If they did, they would not have temples, or laws on tithing, or against drinking or… the list could go on. Yes the atonement is infinite, and let that soak in. What does infinite mean? It covers all sin, and therefore nothing can be added to it from our end. And Jesus is infinite and eternal, because he is God. And lets delve into that a little. Jesus has no beginning. Of his begetting we know little, but we do know that he is begotten from all eternity. This means that in reality Jesus has no beginning and no end according to his divine nature. That is He is, was and always will be God, Just as the Father is, was, and always will be God, and the same with the Spirit. There is an eternal ontological unity to them all that defies the finite logic we operate with in our sinful nature. Jesus is God. He died for you, there is nothing more you can do about it, much less have to, or should do about it. He’s done it. It is finished. Eternity just isn’t the same as time going on forever, but eternity is outside of time.
And Faith unto repentance? As if the two were completely different things, and repentance was the better part. Repentance is the product of faith, or part and parcel of faith. No one has faith who doesn’t have repentance, they are both gifts of God.
