Rev. 21:22-27 (ESV)
And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. [23] And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. [24] By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, [25] and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. [26] They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. [27] But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
No temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God, the Almighty and the Lamb. Now back to earth for a moment. If the New Jerusalem is already a reality, it being the bride of Christ, the believers sanctified by the washing of the water with the word, Eph. 5, then this New Jerusalem should have no temples, as it needs no temples, even now. The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are even now our temples. Sorry, but I can’t help but to make this a bit about Mormonism.
If there is one thing that proves to me that Mormonism is not Christianity, that Mormons are not Christians, it is their blasted insistence on blighting the landscape of Utah with garish “temples” topped with an aptly named “angel” for to him belong many. It goes against this, and it goes against the fourth chapter of John, and never mind little things like the 17th chapter of Leviticus limiting the place of sacrifice to one place which is the home of the Ark of the Covenant, or otherwise sanctified by the Lord.
So the New Jerusalem has no temple. It sees no night, but remains in the day. And the glory and honor of the nations adorn it. Perhaps this makes the New Jerusalem a giant Pergamum Museum of Berlin? Now that is a Museum to behold, entire city gates, walls and temples to ancient gods built inside, and then hall after hall adorned with marble statues and artifacts from one classical culture after another. And a person could spend a lifetime looking at them all and admiring them. Artists sit and sketch them. And one wonders what there will be in heaven to do? No, there will be enough there to keep you walking around with your jaw on the floor in astonishment for all eternity.
