Rev. 9:13-21 (KJV)
And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, [14] Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. [15] And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. [16] And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. [17] And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. [18] By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. [19] For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt. [20] And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: [21] Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
After the pits of hell are opened and the demonic hordes riding grasshoppers are let out, the sixth angel is also instructed to unleash four angels that are bound in the Euphrates, a traditional area for the enemies of Israel to gather.
Now that Israel is a spiritual reality made up of all those who share the same faith as Abraham and are therefore his children, the angels being unleashed from the Euphrates may be nothing more than a symbolic representation on the havoc they are going to unleash on the spiritual Israel.
In anycase these angels are accompanied by a cavalry of two-hundred thousand thousand, riding horses that have the face of lions and the tales of serpents. They ride forward conquering and laying waste to the land, with their tales torment is left in their wake.
They kill two thirds of all men, and yet no one repents of idolatry, murders, sorceries, fornication or thefts. Sorceries, the Greek word is that from which we get the term pharmacy. Drug use goes hand in hand with witchcraft, but I do wonder if here there isn’t also a prohibition against drug abuse in general. I tend to put drug abuse as a subcategory of the sin of drunkenness. But might it also be what this is getting at? Something to think about.
In any case there is no repentance. God sends these plagues to work repentance but they only harden the hearts of those he would have repent. Such is the nature of man. Even when we know better we don’t often repent.

I've never understood that connection of drug abuse with witchcraft. I've heard it before, I believe it but I never can make the connection.
Perhaps it's our modern age? The more or less technical/scientific mind that is masking the connection?
Kind of like "idols" of old. In our modern age we tend to think of "idol worship" as those poor uneducated tribe like cavemen who carve wood and stone into shapes of gods to bow down to. Thanks John Calvin and Hollywood and modern science. It's not until one reads Luther that one gets the real force of what an idol god is, that which one loves and trusts for all good things and flees to in time of distress. "Carving" does not necessitate a pocket knife and some wood or a chisel and some stone but can be a thing "carved out" by reason. That helps unravel the connection covered up for "idols" in the tech/science mind set. Thus, we find even the greatest scientific minds of our age like Sagan and Hawking STILL looking upward and outward for the gods, where are they. They just don't call them "gods" directly but "higher life forms" or "higher advanced intelligent forms of life". But then again that's still like the Greek concept of a god, just not using the term "god" for the "higher intelligent life form".

Larry,
Go to borders pick up a book on witchcraft, the prescription of drugs tends to be all encompassing. Or think of the Indians and Peyote.
But I don't think it is a one to one. I think for some it is just drug use.
